African conference reviews creation of regional micro-finance institutions network

Dakar is hosting a conference looking into the creation of an African network of micro-finance institutions, held by the Women's world banking and the U.N. Development Program.

Micro-finance experts and network coordinators from fifteen African countries are studying cases of each micro-finance institution.

The projected network will aim to support and consolidate national networks while improving the sector's policy and environment. It will also extend technical and financial support to key networks which have established norms.

Several participants stressed the difficulties facing women in accessing loans in view of conditions set by banks which prefer profitable and less risky business.

Nancy Barry, president of the Women's World Banking recalled that the institution's objective is precisely to empower low-income women economically and increase their participation by opening access to finance, information and markets.
