Iraq, Politics, 10/26/1999
The Iraqi opposition has announced it will, as from October 29 hold a conference in New York to draw a joint strategy with the aim of toppling the Iraqi President's Saddam Hussein regime.
AFP quoted a statement by the Iraqi national conference as saying on Monday that the representatives to the conference will once again reiterate in their forthcoming meeting in New York their unity and will affirm their outlook for Iraq's future and unveil a new campaign to topple the current Iraqi government.
The statement said that more than 300 representatives will take part in this first conference for the Iraqi opposition since 1992 and will elect a new leadership for the opposition.
However, the Iraqi opposition had, earlier, a keenness to hold its conference which is presumed to last for three days in Northern Iraq which falls under the control of the Kurdish opposition organization. Yet, the opposition was obliged to change its mind due to security reasons.
Worth mentioning, the US had announced it will give financial aid to the Iraqi opposition to help them Saddam Hussein after the conference will be convened.
