Sudanese opposition criticizes Albright's statements
Sudan, Politics, 10/25/1999
El-Sadek El-Mahdi a former Sudanese prime minister and the head of the opposition Ummah Party criticized today the statement made by US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, in which she stated that Washington fully supports the IGAD initiative for peace in Sudan.
El-Mahdi said IGAD cannot be the only initiative raised for peace in Sudan, and it cannot be a proper framework for solving the Sudanese issue unless it is expanded to include Sudan's problems in both the north and the south.
Albright said, "We believe that the IGAD process is the best way to go forward" because the US does not "support other processes that some are suggesting, the Egyptians, the Libyans."
