Morocco, Egypt agree to foster housing cooperation

Morocco and Egypt decided to upgrade their cooperation in matters of housing and urbanism and a joint committee will meet twice a year to assess the evolution of this cooperation.

The decision was made at a meeting here Wednesday between Moroccan and Egyptian ministers of housing, Mohamed el-Yazghi and Ibrahim Souleimane.

The minutes of the meeting said the two sides will trade experience in matters of low-cost housing and the safeguard and rehabilitation of old districts, and the management of urban areas. They will give incentives to joint ventures and will push forward the creation of a data base to inform enterprises on investment opportunities in both countries.

During the signing ceremony of the minutes, El-Yazghi said Morocco's deficit in housing amounts to 800 thousands lodgings. To make up for the deficit, it is necessary to build 180 thousand unit per year. At present, only 120 thousand lodgings are being constructed.

El-Yazghi-- who is also minister of environment and who was in Cairo to attend the 11th session of the Arab ministerial council in charge of environment issues-- signed with his Egyptian environment minister, Mrs Nadia Makram Obeid, a joint statement on the consolidation of their cooperation in environment matters.

According to the statement, a joint committee will be set up to elaborate joint programs of action and follow up these programs. The committee will grant special interest to public awareness fostering, education and training, promote the exchange of data and see to the drafting of environment-related laws.
