Tunisian opposition members stay on hunger strike London
Tunisia, Politics, 10/21/1999
Tunisian opposition members said they would stay on a hunger strike before the Tunisian embassy in London and in some Arab capitals before the presidential elections in Tunis that will be held on Sunday.
The strikers protest the exclusion of Islamic candidates from the elections, and they are calling for releasing political prisoners.
Tunisian President Zein al-Abidin Ben Ali said, "The election will enhance the democratic multiplicity process in the country," adding that the constitution was adjusted "so that a large number could nominate themselves for the first time in the elections."
