Muslim Brothers delegation in Jordan visited Abu Marzouk in Damascus
Syria-Syria, Politics, 10/21/1999

Hamas political bureau member Mousa Abu Marzouk said he met on Wednesday in Damascus with a delegation representing the Muslim Brothers group in Jordan in order to discuss means of settling the disputes between the Jordanian authorities and Hamas.

He added he discussed with the delegation -- which is composed of the spokesman for the group in Jordan, Jamil Abu Baker and Salem Falahat -- various issues which provoke disputes with the Jordanian government after Jordan had accepted the mediation of the Muslim Brothers in preparation for reaching a solution that is satisfactory for all sides.

While Abu Marzouk did not disclose the nature of debated proposals to reach a settlement, well-informed sources expected the detained Hamas leaders will stay after their release in Amman, but under the condition that they will not practice any political activities in Jordan.

The Jordanian authorities on August 30 took a series of measures against Hamas, due what it has described as "illegal activities conducted by the movement." The Jordanian authorities also closed the Hamas offices in Amman and arrested 15 of its leaders and supporters.

The chairman of the Hamas political bureau, Khaled Mashaal, and its official spokesman, Ibrahim Ghoseh, were arrested on September 23, immediately upon their arrival from Tehran to Amman. On Saturday the two men started a hunger strike for their immediate release, as stated by their lawyer, Saleh al-Armouti.

Abu Marzouk said that the health of the two men is not good. He added, "We hope the Jordanian government will close this file and release the detainees."
