Swedish diplomat visits Laayoune

The director of the North African department at the Swedish Foreign Affairs Ministry, Hans Ahlberg, on Monday visited the Moroccan southern city of Laayoune.

The diplomat was briefed by the wali, Allal Saadaoui, on landmarks in the recovery of the Moroccan southern provinces which climaxed with the "Green March." Saadaoui also explained how and why the kingdom opted for a confirmation referendum to definitely close the file, before he highlighted major socioeconomic achievements in the provinces since their recovery.

Ahlberg also heard testimonies from Sahrawis who fled the Tindouf camps and returned home. They told him about systematic violations of human rights in the camps and asked him to let Swedish and international public opinion know about these daily offenses saying the blockade should be lifted on those sequestrated in Lahmada camps.

He was also told how NGOs dispatching aid were being manipulated and how most of the aid ended in the separatists' personal bank accounts.
