US official: Middle East parties ready to give peace a push forward
Regional-USA, Politics, 10/20/1999

The US president's advisor for national security, Sandy Berger, said on Monday evening that sides concerned with the Middle East peace process are ready to give the peace process a push forward.

The AP quoted Berger as saying that Israel, the Palestinians and Syria are ready to deal with the obstacles impeding this process and reach a peace agreement. He attributed this "assessment" to the talks the US held with the sides concerned. He did not give additional details on the nature of these talks.

Berger, on the other hand, criticized US Senate for its opposition to a draft law on financing operations abroad. He said that President Bill Clinton has special opportunities to strengthen peace and to proceed forward in the US while leading the world, despite the sharp setbacks inflicted by the US Congress in foreign aid and weapons control.
