Efforts to maintain reconciliation in Sudan
Sudan, Politics, 10/19/1999

Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Othman Ismael heads today for Qatar carrying a message from Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir to Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khaleifa al-Thani, in the framework of reviving reconciliation initiatives between Sudan and several of its neighbors and between the government and the opposition.

In statements to SANA's correspondent in Khartoum, Sudanese official sources expected that the Sudanese minister will meet with his Eritrean counterpart in Doha, especially after security committee's talks between the two countries reached a deadlock, a situation which necessitated the intervention of Qatar to revive the Doha agreement signed two months ago between Sudan and Eritrea.

Meanwhile, a Libyan envoy held several meetings in Khartoum on Sunday and discussed with Sudanese officials the Libyan initiative for inter-Sudanese reconciliation, government and opposition.

Meanwhile, the Sudanese daily al-Rai al-Am said in its Monday issue that consultations are being held between Khartoum and Cairo to arrange for a visit to be held by the Sudanese foreign minister soon to Egypt to convey a message from President al-Bashir to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak dealing with the Sudanese national reconciliation issue.
