An Iraqi office to supervise interests in Damascus during 20 days
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 10/18/1999

Well informed sources in Damascus told the London-based al-Hayat daily that an office for supervising the Iraqi interests will be opened in Damascus " within 20 days" and that a delegation representing the Iraqi foreign ministry will visit Damascus within the few coming days to discuss what has been achieved of this diplomatic measure following a boycott of relations since 1980.

This was agreed during the talks held by the Iraqi deputy foreign minister Nabeel Najm with his Syrian counterpart Suleiman Haddad last week in Damascus.

The sources figured out that Iraqi experts will visit Syria to discuss renting offices in Damascus and opening an Iraqi office for supervising interests over which the Algerian flag will be hoisted, and on which will be written also the Algerian embassy, according to the diplomatic norms, and in this office are to work three diplomats at the rank of a minister commissioner.

On February, the Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara and his Iraqi counterpart Muhammad Saeed al-Sahaf agreed to exchange the opening of two offices for supervising their countries interests in the Algerian embassies in Damascus and Baghdad.
