War prisoners question between Eritrea and Ethiopia
Ethiopia-Eritrea, Politics, 10/18/1999
Ethiopia on Sunday accused Eritrea of obstructing the implementation of plans helping the return of some 4,000 Eritreans who currently live in Ethiopia.
A statement released by the government of Ethiopia in Addis Ababa on Sunday said the government of Eritrea refused to receive some 1,500 Eritreans who voluntarily chose on Saturday to return to their country.
The statement added that an unspecified number of Ethiopians were permitted to cross the border between Eritrea and Ethiopia. Most of them were living in the streets of the Eritrean capital, Ethiopia.
However, so far efforts of the Organization of African Unity could not reach a solution to the border disputes between the two countries, although fighting had been suspended after it had lasted for 16 months and claimed the lives of tens of thousands.
Eritrea accepted a peace plan proposed by the Organization of African Unity, but Ethiopia says it is not pleased with certain technical details and expressed its doubts about the extent of Eritrea's commitment to peace.
