King Mohammed arrives today in Oujda

King Mohammed VI, accompanied by Prince Moulay Rachid, arrives in Oujda today, coming from Nador via Berkane.

On Sunday, the king visited the construction site of a new 240 acre district to be built on the area previously covered by the Nador airport and was briefed on works underway of the city's international airport.

The Nador International Airport already catering for domestic and international flights since July 1999 will be completed in the year 2000, opening new opportunities for tourism and other economic sectors.

The king was also briefed on the Nador football stadium project built in preparation for the 2006 soccer World Cup. Morocco, bidding for the cup, has launched a vast national scheme for the construction, in the medium term, of 8 stadia. In case the kingdom is awarded the 2006 event next July, the whole program will be speeded up, and the Nador soccer field will be ready by 2005.

Early in the afternoon and before arriving in Nador, the royal party had stopped in Midar (75 km west of Nador). The king heard explanations on the drinking water supply system to be operated in the area providing Midar and a score of surrounding villages with potable water.

The National Electricity Office is putting $33.4 million (334 million DHS) or 70% of the undertaking, the rest coming from the Nador provincial council and the agency for the economic and social development of northern provinces.
