Palestinian women still seen as inferior by fellow men

The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics reported Saturday that 68 percent of women who have inheritance rights were not to able to achieve those rights. Regarding the ability of women to deal with their properties, the report indicated that the rate of Palestinian males in the Palestinian territories who think that women have the right ability to deal with properties is 28 percent.

This report included males and females above 18 years old. 30 percent of males and 40 percent of females considered that women are able to manage their properties. As for the main decisions pertaining to the family, the report indicated that among males above 18 years old, 88 percent think that the family decisions are taken collectively, whereas the rate was 92 percent among females. The rate was 85.9 percent among males and 90.8 percent among females in the West Bank and 92.1 percent among males and 94.2 percent among females in Gaza.

On marriage decisions, 73 percent of males above 18 years old have taken marriage decisions by themselves and 53 percent of females. Regarding individual property, 52 percent of males and 8 percent of females above 18 years old own a house or real-estate or a share in either.

On inheritance issues, 74.1 percent of the women in the West Bank and 47.1 percent of the women in Gaza have not obtained their inheritance.
