El-Mahdi asserts necessity of coordination between Egyptian - Libyan and IGAD initiatives
Sudan-Regional, Politics, 10/16/1999

In a sudden step, former Sudanese prime minister and leader of the opposition Ummah Party, Al-Sadek El-Mahdi, met yesterday in Rome with a number of foreign ministers from IGAD's partner countries who will meet in the Italian capital on Monday with the foreign ministers of IGAD member states Ethiopia, Eritrea, Uganda, and Kenya to discuss the recent developments in Sudan and the chances for a political solution to the Sudanese crisis.

Meanwhile Hassan Ahmed El-Hassan, the Sudanese opposition Ummah Party's official spokesman, stated that the foreign ministers of IGAD's partner countries, including the countries of the European Union, the USA and Canada, had invited El-Mahdi to meet with them to learn more about the content of messages he previously sent to them about his vision for solving the Sudanese problem.

Al-Hassan added that the leader of the Ummah Party has asserted in these messages that the Sudanese problem must be regarded with a comprehensive perception, as a partial solution and seeking to sign an agreement between the Sudanese government and the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement will not solve the Sudanese problem.

He said El-Mahdi has confirmed to the foreign ministers of the IGAD partner countries that, "Any dialogue must include all the dispute's parties and expand the range of IGAD in its content and form to include, besides Egypt and Libya, other African and Arab states."

Al Sadek El-Mahdi also asserted the necessity of coordinating between the Egyptian - Libyan initiative and IGAD's initiative, regarding them as two complementary initiatives not at cross purposes.
