African conference calls for new world order of sea products marketing

The twenty-two member countries of the ministerial conference on fisheries cooperation between African Atlantic countries called for a new fair world order of sea products marketing.

The conference, which held its 4th session in Conakry, Guinea --Thursday and Friday--, issued a statement pointing out that this new world order must take into account international standards of quality and the situation of developing countries.

Participating countries renewed determination to coordinate stands within regional and international fora to uphold their goals, mainly a rational management of sea resources.

The document-- dubbed "statement on a sustained exploitation of sea resources to back economic and social development in the region"-- asserts the organization's attachment to the setting up of appropriate checking and surveillance mechanisms to preserve and protect sea resources.

The conference equally denounced illegal fishing activities in the region and voiced attachment to the Rome declaration on a responsible fishing. Participants underlined the role of the conference as an implement to back the member states' approach as to the best way to serve the socio-economic interests of the region.

The conference announced its backing to the candidacy of Senegalese jacques Diouf for a new term at the head of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and decided to convene its 5th session in year 2001 in Gabon.

The Moroccan delegation to the conference was led by Minister of Maritime Fisheries Thami Khyari.

The ministerial conference on fisheries cooperation between African Atlantic countries held its first meeting in Morocco in 1989 at the kingdom's initiative and adopted the Rabat declaration that laid the bases for a comprehensive regional cooperation between the 22 member countries.

Morocco holds the permanent secretariat of the conference.
