Over 3 million pupils enrolled in Morocco's basic education
Morocco, Education, 10/15/1999

Some 3,637,000 pupils were enrolled this year in Moroccan basic education schools, covering primary and part of the secondary education.

The figure was disclosed by Moroccan National Education Minister, Smail Alaoui, during the weekly question time at the house of representatives, the lower house of parliament.

The minister, who said that some 1,783,000 pupils were enrolled in rural world schools, disclosed that his department plans to build 3,775 new schools, including 2,714 in the countryside.

Morocco is intending to reform its educational system. A National Education Charter was announced, in this connection, last week by King Mohammed VI. The Charter, that will be tabled before the Parliament, provides, inter alia, for a pay-system for the rich.

School syllabi witnessed no change this year, as the issue is linked to the reforms that will be operated in the future on the whole educational system, the official said.
