Arab journalists union hails new era in Morocco
Regional, Politics, 10/15/1999

The Arab journalists' union has hailed the orientations of the new era in Morocco, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI.

This came in a statement published here on Thursday by the union's permanent bureau at the end of its meeting.

The union said these orientations will open new democratic prospects for the country.

The union permanent bureau debated a set of issues germane to the profession as well as the situation prevailing in the Arab world. The role of journalists who are called to contribute to taking up the challenges facing the Arab world was also debated.

The Union denounced all forms of restrictions to the freedom of the press in the Arab world and asked Arab governments to amend their press laws to secure the freedom of the press and of opinion and to abolish all the laws prosecuting the freedom of speech and opinion.
