Syria-European Union, Politics, 10/15/1999
The European Union's Middle East peace process special envoy, Miguel Moratinos, said that Europe is not optimistic over nearby resumption of peace talks on the Syrian and Lebanese tracks.
In a statement to the Lebanese daily al-Sharq issued on Thursday, Moratinos stated that no concrete progress has been attained as a result of the efforts made by the US and the European states. He added that conditions are still at a standstill in the meantime, saying that the efforts currently exerted by the US and the European Union aim at resuming talks on the Syrian and Lebanese tracks and making them a success.
He stressed the backing of the European Union for the efforts made by the US to eliminate obstacles.
