Cyprus anxious over Turkey joining the EU

Cyprus on Wednesday expressed its anxieties over the possibility of giving Turkey the position of a candidate state for European Union membership, without any preconditions during the EU summit scheduled to be held in December.

News reports quoted the Cypriot government's spokesman as saying on Wednesday that the Cypriot government is making contacts with several European countries in regard to this matter.

This matter was also due to be discussed later yesterday between the foreign ministers of Greece and Cyprus in Athens.

On Tuesday, Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem informed the Turkish Parliament that there is a chance for Turkey to become a candidate state for membership in the European Union.
