Tangiers inhabitants pin great hopes on king's visit
Morocco, Politics, 10/13/1999

The inhabitants of the Moroccan northern city of Tangiers pin great hopes on the visit King Mohammed VI will pay to the city part of a 10-day tour of several provinces.

Since the announcement of the king's tour, the city started readying to welcome the king, and streets were embellished with national flags and banderoles, wishing the warmest welcome to the king and lauding his actions for a radiant future of Morocco.

Observers believe that King Mohammed VI's visit to Tangiers will undoubtedly usher in a new and dynamic era for the social and economic development of the city whose charm has always spelled Moroccans and foreigners alike.

The visit testifies to the paramount importance the king grants to the city, said Abdellah Chbabou, a Tangiers MP.

The local inhabitants will seize the opportunity to renew allegiance to King Mohammed VI and attachment to the Alawite throne.

The Alawite kings have always granted Tangiers a special interest. History records the visit that Late King Mohammed V (King Mohammed VI's grandfather) paid to the city in 1947 to show to the international community that Tangier is and will always be a part and parcel of Morocco.

Tangier was then under an international status, while central Morocco was occupied by France and the north and the south were under Spanish control.

During his visit to Tangiers King Mohammed VI will launch several projects including a new industrial zone and an off-shore area.
