Turkey-Greece, Politics, 10/13/1999
It was announced in Athens on Tuesday that Greek Foreign Minister Yeoryios Papandoniou will visit capitals of the European Union member states this month in order to discuss lifting Greece's opposition to officially nominate Turkey to the EU membership.
News reports in Athens quoted a source at the Greek Foreign Ministry as saying that the Greek Prime Minister Kostis Stephanopoulos asked his Turkish counterpart, Bulent Ecevit, in a message conveyed by the Greek ambassador in Ankara, for Turkey to proceed with its initiative concerning Cyprus and in helping to improve Greek-Turkish relations.
