Egyptian scientist wins Nobel Prize for chemistry
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced today that it has awarded the 1999 Nobel Prize in chemistry to scientist Ahmed Zewail who holds dual citizenship in Egypt and the USA "for his pioneering investigation of fundamental chemical reactions, using ultra-short laser flashes, on the time scale on which the reactions actually occur."

Jordan decided yesterday to postpone the scheduled visit of Israeli Minister of Trade and Industry Ran Cohen to Amman tomorrow in protest of the harassment to which a group of the Jordanian parliamentarians was exposed during their visit to Hebron a few days ago. Official Jordanian sources said, "The visit was postponed to an indefinite date." Jordan presented a formal protest to Israel on Sunday, in which it asked the Israeli authorities to investigate the incident.

The United Nations informed the Palestinian government that it has specified an international code carrying Palestine's name on the Internet. Palestinian Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Nabil Shaath said the code "PS," in reference to the state of Palestine, with the international phone code form important symbols for sovereignty and independence. The Palestinian Authority refused last year a code carrying "WG," i.e the West Bank and Gaza.

Oman yesterday officially started the celebration of construction on Sohar Port, Oman News agency reported. The port and an associated free-trade zone will cover 47 square km and port construction includes the creation of two breakwaters and dredging for the port and port entrance. It also includes the construction of cargo and container berths and two liquid cargo berths, to be used for oil, the report said. Work on the project is expected to be complete in 2003.
