Regional, Culture, 10/12/1999
The Arab states commemorated on Monday the Arab child day and honored at a ceremony in Cairo some twenty outstanding Arab children in the fields of sports, sciences and arts.
The children from 18 Arab states, including Morocco, are participating in the week-long event held under the topic "the child's right to a healthy and secure environment."
During the opening ceremony, Egypt's first lady underlined the importance of environment protection which has become one of social economic development criteria and one of the requirements for integration in the new world order, exactly like democracy and human rights.
Egypt's First Lady Suzanne Mubarak said all Arab states believe that child's promotion is a crucial issue and are aware of the need to establish a link between this promotion and a healthy environment. She added that all international and Arab conventions pertaining to children's rights stress that a healthy and secure environment is one of the child's fundamental rights.
An Arab league report released on the occasion said 18 Arab states have worked out national plans to promote childhood.
