Government ponders employment of graduates
Morocco, Politics, 10/11/1999
Moroccan Interior Minister, Driss Basri, said over the weekend the government is pondering concrete measure to employ jobless doctors and engineers.
The government is collecting new elements likely to help it hire job-seekers, Basri said at a meeting with a 314-member delegation of jobless graduates.
Official figures put joblessness rates at 25% in some specialties, while the national rate is around 19%.
The interior minister assured the jobless doctors and engineers of King Mohammed VI's high solicitude and said employment tops national priorities, as put by the King.
King Mohammed VI, who inaugurated last Friday the fall session of the Parliament said he grants "a paramount importance" to the issue of employment and joblessness, and voiced deep sadness over the situation "that affects our youth, be they educated or not."
In his meeting with the jobless, Basri said the Government is pondering concrete measures in favor of job-seekers, be they doctors or engineers, so that each graduate easily finds a job in the private, public or semi-public sectors.
The King stressed in his speech before the parliament that "public administration should not remain the sole employer" and urged the youth to turn to the private sector and to show a spirit of initiative and creativity.
Basri underlined that local councils will be directly or indirectly involved in the effort to employ the higher degree holders.
Basri also met with another 125-member of blind graduates in quest of jobs.
The disabled diploma holders informed the minister of the difficulties they face in finding jobs. Basri urged the unemployed handicapped persons to contact the walis and governors of their regions who had instructions to help them find jobs.
