Al-Bashir opens the constituent conference for the ruling party in Sudan
Sudan, Politics, 10/8/1999

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir announced at the inauguration of the meetings of the constituent conference of the ruling National Congress party that this party was founded for the sake of building "a Sudan which enjoys political stability, economic growth and reconciliation."

He described this party as a means of bringing together all the Sudanese. He added that the objective of this party is to build the country economically and establish a just and comprehensive peace in the south.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the Sudanese National Council (parliament), Hassan Turabi, said the national conference includes all Sudanese in the south and in the north alike, in contradiction to other parties which only include intellectuals. He welcomed the call advocated by the leader of the Ummah Party, al-Sadeq al-Mahdi, to resort to dialogue and reconciliation. He said the conference seeks to maintain the unity of the country and denied any dispute with al-Bashir.

In an open message to the three-day conference, which is attended by delegations representing 40 countries, al-Mahdi called for avoiding damage threatening the country and the calamity surrounding the Sudanese.

It is expected that al-Turabi will be elected as secretary general of the party, to chair the leadership office and al-Bashir as speaker of the Shoura council.
