Khartoum releases opposition leaders
Sudan, Politics, 10/7/1999
Sheikh El-Mahmoud Abdu, the secretary of the Sudanese supporters affairs front which has loyalty to Sadeq El-Mahdi, the head of the opposition Ummah Party, said the Sudanese security bodies released the leaders of the Ummah Party who were detained by security bodies on Tuesday.
The detentions included secretary Abdel Rahman Nakdallah, a prominent leader in the party; Abdel Nabi Ali Ahmed, the former governor of Darfour state; and Abdel Khalek Abdel Raswal; as well as a number of workers in the organization and youth supporters were present at the time of the security forces' attack on the headquarters of the organization.
Sheikh Abu said the workers in the organization and the young supporters who were detained were exposed to "violent hitting," but the investigation into them didn't deal with the incident of an explosion that targeted a petroleum pipeline but concentrated on their sources of income and whether they had a relation to the student demonstrations Khartoum witnessed recently.
