President Jiang Zemin of China will pay an official visit to Morocco this October 27-30, it was officially announced in Rabat on Tuesday. President Zemin will be visiting the kingdom at the invitation of King Mohammed VI, a statement of the ministry of the royal household, protocol and chancellery said. The Chinese president will start on October 19 a tour that will lead him to Great Britain, France, Portugal, Morocco, Algeria and Saudi Arabia.

Palestinian Legislative Council Hanan Ashrawi was granted the prize of the World Forum of Parliaments for 1999. Ashrawi said in an interview with Israel Radio today, "This prize is considered an indicator and appreciation of the Palestinian people's efforts in order to enhance democracy on the international level." The radio added that Ashrawi is the first Palestinian and Arab personality to receive this prize.

An African diplomatic meeting is currently being held in Cairo, aiming at training African diplomatic cadres in English-speaking countries from 22 African states. The head of the Egyptian diplomatic institute, Mohmud Fargal, said these cadres will be trained in negotiating style, African relations, means of keeping the peace and skills of the diplomatic work. He added that this meeting is being held in association with the Egyptian Fund for Technical Cooperation with Africa affiliated to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

At least two persons were killed in Lahij province in Yemen because of floods that resulted from heavy rainfall. The Yemeni daily al-Thawra said the recent floods also inflicted damage and heavy losses on the cultivated lands and killed cattle in the province, which is situated to the south of Sanaa. This is the most violent wave of rainfall in Lahij since 1982.
