Spanish ombudsman: democracy is prospering in Morocco under royal reign
Morocco, Politics, 10/6/1999

The ombudsman of the Spanish province of Catalunia, Antoine Canitas, said monarchy is the best warrant of democracy in Morocco.

In a meeting with Moroccan human rights minister, Mohamed Aujjar, Canitas said democracy can only develop in Morocco, hailing the Moroccan experience in the protection of human rights.

After he was briefed on the work and field of action of the ombudsman office (called people's defender in Spain), the minister surveyed the stages covered by Morocco in the protection of human rights and stressed that king Mohammed VI renewed in his first speech (July 30) Morocco's adherence to human rights and democracy principles.

He also dealt with the government strategy and programs, embodied in the collaboration with the United Nations to create a human rights training, documentation and communication center and two legal and psychological consulting centers for homeless children.

Aujjar further deplored that none of the 14 countries, signatory of the UN 1990 convention on the protection of the rights of immigrants and families, is a host country for immigrants.

The ombudsman also informed head of the Moroccan foundation of emigrants, Omar Azziman, of a law project for the regularization of illegal immigrants that will be submitted to the parliament of Catalunia.
