British sources: Syria will not go under Israeli pressures
Syria-Israel-UK, Politics, 10/6/1999

The Kuwaiti daily al-Watan quoted well-informed British sources as asserting on Tuesday that Syria will not be subjected to Israeli and American pressures to rearrange its priorities in light of the Israeli demands to discuss the issue of Lebanon first, because starting with this issue will be directly linked to the extent of what would be achieved of joint security measures, especially following Israel's withdrawal from the Golan first.

The sources stated that Syria's adherence to this principle may create a security and political embarrassment for Israel's government with Israeli voters, as Barak had promised his voters of a withdrawal from south Lebanon by June, 2000.

The sources added that the Israeli media campaign in collaboration with the US will show Syria as the main party responsible for obstructing the negotiations or for proceeding slowly if President al-Assad is committed to discussing the issue of the Golan first.

The sources asserted that Barak's next strategy will be reactivating the issue of the Israeli withdrawal from the Golan and calling for more Syrian guarantees, especially in freezing the military activities of the Hizbullah party, before shouldering security obligations concerning the withdrawal from the Golan.
