US Justice Department expels Saudi citizen
Saudi Arabia, Politics, 10/6/1999
The US Justice Department said that the US will shortly expel to Saudi Arabia, Saudi citizen Hani El-Sayegh who is suspected of being involved in the attack which targeted Americans living in the Khobar Towers at al-Zahran airbase.
US Deputy Attorney General Eric Holder as said in a statement on Monday that the expulsion decision to Saudi Arabia has just come now because Washington "does not presently have evidence which it can use in a U.S. court to prosecute El-Sayegh for the Khobar attack."
The statement added that Saudi Arabia believes it has enough evidence to justify the official accusations against al-Sayegh.
He added that Saudi Arabia cooperated with the Justice Department in the investigation into the incident, that it also holds several other persons who are involved in this same case and it "has, in the past, demonstrated resolve in the prosecution of terrorists."
The statement also said that investigations continue, especially towards " information concerning the involvement of Saudi nationals, Iranian government officials and others," noting that the investigation has not confirmed whether the Iranian government was behind the attack or not.
