Mediterranean olive oil producing cities request EU backing
Regional, Economics, 10/5/1999

The Mediterranean olive oil producing cities have requested the European Union to extend financial backing to olive oil producers.

The moves conducted so far to get this backing were reviewed at a meeting held over the weekend in Taounate, to the north east of Fez, by the general council of the federation of Mediterranean olive oil producing cities.

The meeting discussed the federation projects to promote the olive oil sector. The projects include the setting up of a data bank in every olive oil producing country in the Mediterranean and the organization of a world olive oil festival in Tunisia Next December, on the fringes of the federation's upcoming session.

Participants from France, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, Spain and Tunisia equally discussed means of consolidating cooperation between the federation members to take up the challenges of the coming millennium and face up the competitiveness of other olive oil producers such as Argentina, Australia and South Africa.

The contribution of member cities to the federation budget was also brought up.

A draft twinning accord between the provincial council of Taounate and the department of the French city of Nimes was initialed on the fringes of the meeting. The accord mainly provides for the transfer of technology.
