Omani minister denies mediation between the US and Iran

Omani Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs Youssef Bin Alawi has denied reports that Oman is making a mediation between the US and Iran as had been recently asserted by the American press.

In a statement to the London-based al-Hayat daily, Bin Alawi said, "We are not mediators in anything. And this matter has to be made clear. I do not think that the US and Iran are in need of mediation."

Replying to a question whether he had conveyed a US message to Iran, Bin Alawi said "we" do not work that way. And that is just "words of the press," that Oman is not obliged to answer.

He added, "We know the volume of the complicated problems existing in the Iranian - US relations." He continued there are several messages exchanged between the US and Iran, of which some are through the media, or through a mediator or either through the offices supervising the US "interests" in the Swiss embassy in Tehran.
