On the US strategy towards the Gulf region
Turkey-Regional-USA, Politics, 10/5/1999

The Turkish daily Orta Doo on Monday centered on the US strategies towards the Arab Gulf region.

In an analysis, the paper said that observers see that the policies pursued by the US President Bill Clinton towards Baghdad and Tehran are no longer beneficial to the US, and therefore the observers stressed the need for the US alleviation of tough stances towards Iran and Iraq. The paper added that other observers stand firmly against a proposal as such.

The paper said there are two very important questions on the US work agenda. The first is the US stance towards Iraq which intends to make a political change in Iraq. The second question is based on the assumption of dividing Iraq into three different areas.

The Turkish paper added that on the other hand, the US accepts the Iranian official ideology as a "legitimate ideology" and that each of the US and Iran are desirous to resume bilateral dialogue, expecting that in the coming months Washington might alleviate pressures on Tehran.

The Turkish paper continued that Turkey is concerned with these developments. Turkey fears that the improvement of the US-Iranian relations would pave the way for transporting the oil of the Caspian Sea to the West via the Iranian territories.

The paper said that despite of what has been said, an objective evaluation of such development between Iran and the US would positively reflect on the stability in the region.
