Music shows to alleviate poverty
Regional-International, Culture, 9/30/1999

Three major music shows will be simultaneously held on October 9 in New York, London and Geneva as part of a poverty alleviation program designed by the UNDP and supported by the largest Internet equipment provider company CISCO Systems.

According to the UNDP, the "Netaid" concerts will be given by famous artists such as Celine Dion, George Michael and Eurythmics, and the proceeds will be channelled to help refugees in Kosovo and in African countries.

The shows will be broadcast across the world.

The aim of the initiative is to fight poverty, which affects more than one billion people across the globe who currently live on less than one dollar a day, according to the UNDP.

"This record breaking radio broadcast will enable NetAid to reach and connect the developing world which relies on radio, with the industrialized nations as never before," said Mark Malloch Brown, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). "This will help create a truly global force to fight poverty."

Cisco said, NetAid is a long-term initiative created by Cisco Systems and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to help end the growing problem of extreme poverty.
