Morocco-Iraq-UK, Politics, 9/30/1999
The pro-Iraq delegation will usher in a genuine solidarity campaign with the Iraqi people and put a legitimate pressure to lift the sanctions imposed on Baghdad, Moroccan Premier, Abderrahmane Youssoufi, said.
Youssoufi made the statement, while receiving British Labor MP, George Gallawy, who leads "the Caravan", under the motto "Maryam Appeal: We Love the Iraqi people."
Youssoufi highlighted Morocco's initiatives in favor of the Iraqi people, especially the children.
Gallawy hailed his meeting with Youssoufi as a strong motivation for all the Caravan's volunteers, who seek to report the standpoint of a large part of the British population opposing the unfair Western policy against Iraq.
The caravan, bound to Baghdad, will cross Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt and Jordan, Before reaching Iraq in a 10,000-KM unprecedented solidarity journey.
Joining Youssoufi's backing to the journey, Moroccan Parliamentary groups renewed on Wednesday their decry of the unfair sanctions against Iraq, which embodies the west's double standard policy.
The MPs, who met with the caravan's volunteers, rejected all the baseless arguments meant to maintain the embargo and continue the air blitzes against Iraq.
Speaker of the Moroccan house of representatives (lower chamber of parliament), Abdelouahed Radi, called for the reactivation of the Arab joint action to alleviate the sufferings of the Iraqi people.
Radi recalled that the Moroccan parliament has always attracted the attention of the international community during the various World fora on the adverse and inhuman effects of the sanctions.
The Labor MP is accompanied by 18 volunteers from the United Kingdom who joined the initiative, geared towards lifting the economic sanctions imposed on Iraq since its invasion of Kuwait in 1990.
Gallaway recalled that more than 1 million Iraqis died during and since the Gulf War. What is worse, he said, is that this dramatic situation still prevails due to the embargo imposed on Iraq and the repeated American and British raids.
The Caravan seeks to mobilize the international public opinion for the lifting of the embargo and the halting of the British and American raids.
Mariam, whose name is used as a motto of the Caravan, is a child who suffers from Leukemia, and where raids against Iraq are blamed as the cause of her Leukemia.
