Moussa strongly denies differences between Syria and Egypt
Egypt-Syria, Politics, 9/30/1999
Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa has called on the Israeli government to resume negotiations on the Syrian track from the point where they broke off and to maintain a complete withdrawal from the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, according to what had been reached with the former Israeli government of Yitzhak Rabin.
In statements on Wednesday, Moussa criticized statements made by Israeli Foreign Minister David Levy concerning the peace role played by the UN, noting that the current Israeli practices are in flagrant violation of the basics of a just and comprehensive peace in the region.
He said that if Israeli settlement activities were halted, there would be no need for a pertinent UN resolution on this matter. "But if settlement continued, a UN resolution would be mandatory for the international community to deal with such serious violation of the principles of peace," he added.
Moussa stated that resuming multilateral negotiations is linked to achieving tangible progress on all tracks of the Middle East peace process.
Moussa also denied any differences between Syria and Egypt. He said he met with Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa four times in New York during the meetings of the UN General Assembly last week.
