Blair highlights European role in Middle East peace
Regional-UK, Politics, 9/30/1999
British Prime Minister Tony Blair has expressed hopes of reaching a successful settlement in the Middle East that would be for the good of all sides and the world, alike.
The BBC said that during his meeting with Arab ambassadors and diplomats accredited in Britain on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the British Labor Party, Blair indicated that the Arab-Israeli conflict has become the preoccupation of the international community and of interest to the world as a whole.
Blair added that when a conflict as such erupts, it either moves towards a settlement or become more escalated. He expressed his hope that a successful settlement will be reached in the Middle East under the feeling of optimism prevailing through the world.
Europe has played an effective role in the peace process and has not been given enough credit for the effective levers it used in the past to push the peace process forward.
