The US and the Syrian track
Syria-Israel-USA, Politics, 9/30/1999

Israel Radio has quoted US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright as saying that the US administration believes negotiations on the Israeli-Syrian track will resume next month after an intervention by US President Bill Clinton, who will arrive in the region.

Albright's statements were expressed on Monday night during her meeting with Israeli Foreign Minister David Levy.

Israel Radio said on Tuesday that the US is embarking on studying a formula to be accepted by both Syria and Israel, in order to resume negotiations between the two sides. The radio added that among proposed ideas is totally ignoring "the point from the point where negotiations left off" between the two sides and instead that the " declaration of intention" to include an item saying that the "Golan is part of the Syrian territories."

Israel Radio added that Albright will once again meet with her Syrian counterpart Farouk al-Sharaa. Al-Sharaa and Albright met at the beginning of the meetings of the UN General Assembly just 10 days ago.
