The US and the Gulf Cooperation Council states on Monday called on Iran to find out a solution with the United Arab Emirates over three disputed Gulf islands. A statement released following a meeting held in New York between US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and her GCC counterpart on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly said this matter should be settled according to international law and in the course of good neighborly relations, either through direct negotiations or through resorting to the International Court of Justice. A Jordanian parliamentary delegation led by the speaker of parliament, Abdul Hadi al-Majali, will visit Gaza next week in the first visit of its kind. The Jordanian dailies said the delegation will meet during its visit with high-ranking officials at the Palestinian government as well as visit several Palestinian cities. Go

Six Iraqi citizens were wounded, including two children, in southern Iraq as a result of a raid launched by US planes against residential areas in the region. The Iraqi Information Ministry said the raid targeted al-Amara province and direct damage took place to property. Go

In a report from occupied Jerusalem the al-Quds Press said that Israel has allowed detained Syrian citizen Yasser al-Mouzen to contact members of his family in Damascus to ask one of them to donate him a kidney and save his life. Go

For the second day in a row light- to medium-intensity rain accompanied by thunder and a decrease in temperature fell on the mountain areas in Al Fujayrah in the United Arab Emirates yesterday. The rain was focused on Masafi, Merbat and El-Bairah. Merbat's dam held quantities of rainwater, and farms as well as plains were filled with water. Go

Iran and Iraq agreed to resume negotiations regarding the return of the prisoners of war in the two countries since the first Gulf war, which lasted for eight years between them. The Iraqi News Agency said the decision to resume negotiations was taken after talks on the margin of the meetings of the United Nations General Assembly in New York between Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammed Said al-Sahaf and his Iranian counterpart, Kamal Kharazi. Chad and Sudan signed yesterday a security agreement in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, in the attendance of Chadian Minister of Interior Omar Jebrila and his Sudanese counterpart, Abdul Rahim Mohamed Hussein. The agreement calls for convening monthly meetings to discuss security issues and take joint procedures to combat smuggling through the borders, in addition to implementing other joint operations. Jordanian Prime Minister Abdul Raouf al-Rawabdah on Tuesday in Amman reviewed with the chief of the British Air Force, Lt. Gen. Richard Jones, bilateral relations between the two countries in multi-faceted fields, especially in defense areas, and the exchange of training and experts in this regard. Go

The Palestinian Ministry of Information denounced the procedure taken by an Israeli company putting a photo of Jerusalem's Al Aqsa mosque on wine bottles named "Jerusalem 2000," saying, "Starting such a procedure hurts the Moslems' feelings in Jerusalem, Palestine and the whole world." Go

The Algerian daily al-Aseel said on Tuesday that nine citizens were wounded following a bomb explosion in al-Meleih city in the Jijel district. The paper added that a police officer was killed near a gas station on the road leading to Tebessa and al-Hammamat. Go

The United Nations has resumed the delivery of aid to central and southern Somalia, an UN spokesperson said. Go

A 3,000 year-old carved-rock tomb was found by an Egyptian team in Abu-Seir, Giza. The team also found 9 limestone columns, the walls of another tomb, a large statuette of the god Hit-Hor in the form of a cow, pot and alabaster pieces and a bust of goddess Hit-Hor as a human. "The tomb was found adjacent to the tomb of King Nakht-Min of the 19th Dynasty," Mohamed Al-Saghir, Head of Egyptian Antiquities Sector at the Supreme Council for Antiquities, said. Go

Israel's Channel 2 television quoted Prime Minister Ehud Barak as saying on the future of the occupied Golan Heights, "let me make this much clear, I will not go to any agreement that will not work to strengthen our country," Jerusalem Post reported, adding, "I can tell you that there is no formula worked out yet which will allow for the resumption of the talks with Syria, but I do not want to mislead anybody, for an agreement with Syria means very painful concessions on the Golan Heights."
