Hamas leader sends message to King Abdullah
Jordan-Palestine, Politics, 9/29/1999
The founder of the Hamas movement, Sheikh Ahmad Yassin, has announced that he will send another message to Jordan's King Abdullah II, in which he will say that he is still waiting for "the reply of the Jordanian king to his first message."
Earlier, Sheikh Yassin had sent a message to King Abdullah in which he expressed his readiness to come to Amman to discuss the crisis of the Hamas movement and detention of its leader.
The Jordanian daily al-Dostour quoted Sheikh Yassin's statement as saying, "We have sent a message to the king to facilitate the matters and to work together in order to settle the problem in a way that ensures Jordan's security and stability and guarantees Hamas' political and media presence in Jordan. And until now we have not received positive remarks."
On whether the leaders of Hamas in Jordan are ready to leave for another country if a settlement is reached, Sheikh Yassin said, "where will the Jordanian citizen move?" adding that Hamas will stay in Jordan and the leaders of Hamas, each in his own country.
Sheikh Yassin called on Arab leaders not to ask Hamas to drop the arms as long as the occupation exists in the Palestinian territories.
