Libyan-Tunisia economic cooperation
Libya-Tunisia, Politics, 9/28/1999

The secretary of the Libyan general committee, Muhammad Ahmad al-Manqoush, started on Monday a two-day visit to Tunisia, during which he will discuss with Tunisian officials economic cooperation between the two countries.

Upon his arrival in Tunis, the Libyan official held talks with Tunisian Prime Minister Hamid Karoui, after which the two officials presided over a meeting for the joint cooperation committee which will conclude its meetings today.

This committee, the higher commission for cooperation between Libya and Tunisia, holds annual meetings as well as meetings held every six months between the two countries premiers to discuss joint ventures and the promotion of trade exchange.

Al-Manqoush's visit to Tunisia came just a few weeks from the start of exploration work in an oil field the two sides agreed to exploit together in 1997.

The two sides also decided to pump some two billion cubic meters of natural gas from Libya to Tunisia as of the beginning of the year 2003. However, the trade balance between the two countries in 1998 exceeded 550 million dinars, representing a surplus of 16 million dinars for the interest of Tunisia. The two sides agreed to have the volume of their trade exchange in 1999 reach some 700 million dinars.

Al-Manqoush's visit to Tunisia will be a chance to discuss political and regional issues of concern to the two countries, especially the Middle East question and the Arab Maghreb Union.

Tunisia and Libya maintain very good political and economic relations in the Arab Maghreb Union, which also includes Algeria, Morocco and Mauritania.
