Mubarak: Major change expected in Egypt
Egypt, Politics, 9/28/1999

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will take his constitutional oath on October 5 to assume the presidency of Egypt for a fourth term of office after he won reelection with a majority of 93.97%.

Immediately after the oath-taking ceremony President Mubarak will deliver a speech before the parliament in which he will declare the main outline for his policy toward internal, regional and international issues.

The hot issues awaiting President Mubarak in his fourth term of office include completion of the economic reform programs, withstanding the large discrepancy between exports and imports, escalated pressure from the opposition over "political and constitutional reform," following 10 years of implementing "privatization policies."

Following his oath, Mubarak will receive the resignation of the government of Prime Minister Kamal El-Ganzouri.

In an interview with Al Gomhouria newspaper, Mubarak said that a major change is expected in the appointment of the new government, but he did not specify the change. "I am busy considering the dimensions and sides of the change carefully," he said.

He further stressed that his new term of office would focus on Egyptian youths. "Youth will be at the center of attention during the next stage because they are the mainstay of the nation in the 21st century," he said, addding, " Efforts will continue to create jobs for them as much as possible."

Mubarak added, "I do not think now of any change in the constitution because I am keen on the stability of the country. I can never allow this stability to be shaken."

He said he is "confident" that businesses will respond to his call to help build low-cost housing for low-income citizens.

On the subject of Egypt's foreign relations, Mubarak said, Having a strong relation with the outside world automatically reflects on home. They are the two sides of the same coin."
