Muslim Brothers call for abrogating emergency in Egypt
Egypt, Politics, 9/28/1999

The deputy for the general guide of the Muslim Brothers group, who is also its spokesman, Mamoun al-Huseibi, has called on Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to respond to demands raised by the opposition and make political and constitutional reforms that avail the expansion of the democratic margin in the country.

In statements he made on Monday to the London-based al-Hayat daily, al-Hudeibi asserted the need of abrogating the emergency law, "which restricts the political movement in Egypt and the activities of the parties and their abilities to express themselves and maintain direct contacts with the masses."

He called for releasing all political detainees and adopting the principle of the freedom to establish parties and define the higher constitutional court as a reference to settle disputes over establishing any new party instead of resorting the court of the parties and the committee in charge of the parties' affairs.
