On detention of Hamas leaders
Syria-Jordan, Politics, 9/28/1999

The Jordanian weekly al-Majd has said that the only Arab state which welcomed Hamas political bureau member Mousa Abu Marzouk after he was evacuated from Jordan upon returning together with the chairman of Hamas' political bureau, Khaled Mashaal, and the official spokesman for Hamas, Ibrahim Ghoshe, is Syria, in which Abu Marzouk arrived last Thursday.

The Jordanian paper said Abu Marzouk spent after his expulsion from Amman one day and night at al-Sharq hall at Dubai's airport, because he does not have an entry visa to any country.

The paper said the leaders of the Palestinian opposition alliance force in Damascus met immediately with Abu Marzouk upon his arrival and decided, following a lengthy dialogue during which criticism was made for the response shown by Hamas and the Muslim Brothers towards the tough Jordanian measures, to assign the follow-up committee of the Palestinian national conference to carry out a series of political and media activities aimed at releasing Hamas detainees.

Al-Majd continued that the Jordanian security circles have escalated their campaign of chasing the two members of the political bureau of Hamas, Muhammad Nazal and Ezzat al-Rashq, who have been in hiding since the release of the arrest warrant against them one month ago.

The Jordanian weekly added that this campaign is manifested in increasing security control points for the places that Nazal and al-Rashq are expected to visit and in investigating their very close friends to get information on places where they stay in order to detain them.
