Saleh declared winner in Yemeni presidential elections
Yemen, Politics, 9/27/1999
Yemeni Minister of Interior Husayn Muhammad al-Arab said President Ali Abdullah Saleh won the election with the vote of 92% of the participants voting in the October 24 elections, while the other candidate, Najib Qahtan al-Shaabi, got the rest of the votes.
Yemeni opposition sources in Cairo told ArabicNews.com that these elections are scandalous as the Yemeni president chose a candidate to run against him from the ruling party without giving the chance for leaders who represent other trends to be candidates.
The sources asked President Saleh to make comprehensive political reforms so the democratic track in Yemen can be developed.
