Sheikh Hamad bin Jasem denies coup attempt in Qatar
Qatar, Politics, 9/27/1999
Sheikh Hamad Bin Jasem Bin Hamad al-Thani, a member of the ruling royal family in Qatar said on Sunday upon being presented before the main criminal court in Doha for the first time, has denied the three charges addressed to him, which are attempting to replace the ruler of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khaleifa al-Thani in 1996; carrying the weapon against the state; and attempt he made with a foreign state to launch an attack against the state (Qatar). These are charges which might have penalties of death or lifelong imprisonment.
The three charges were also addressed to the convicted Ghanem al-Kuwari, who was arrested in July. The chairman of the court announced that the number of the suspects decreased following the death of two of them due to "natural reasons."
The session was postponed until October 3.
The Qatari authorities have accused former Emir Sheikh Khaleifa Bin Hamad al-Thani, currently in exile, of being behind the attempt to topple his son, who by his turn toppled his father in June 1995.
