Turkish relations with Syria

The Turkish daily Millet quoted Turkish diplomats as saying on Friday that despite the fact that the PKK was not totally eliminated from Syria, Syria is no longer a center for the PKK organization.

They added that the Turkish officials want to improve bilateral cooperation in security matters because the problem of the PKK is not exterminated yet, although a new era of mutual respect and common interests started between the two countries.

The Turkish paper indicated that during the meeting between Turkish Foreign Minister Ismael Cem and his Syrian counterpart Farouk al-Sharaa in New York, al-Sharaa expressed Syria's concern towards the possibility of Turkey decreasing of the flow of water to Syria from Turkey when the southeastern Anadolia project (al-Ghab) is completed.

The paper added that for his part Cem expressed his confidence that the two countries will be able to reach an amicable solution to this problem.

The paper added that Cem, at the same time stressed that Turkey pins great importance on achieving progress in the Middle East peace process. He ruled out that Turkey is annoyed because of any Syrian-Israeli closeness.
