Clinton: US should fulfill Wye commitments
Palestine-USA, Politics, 9/24/1999
US President Bill Clinton said yesterday before meeting with Palestinian President Yasser Arafat that the United States needs to meet its obligations under the Wye River agreement.
"I hope the Congress will give me the funding both for Israel and for the Palestinian Authority, so that we can meet our obligations," he said.
Clinton added that his talks with Arafat were to discuss bilateral relations and the final status talks between the Palestinian Authority and Israel. " I intend to continue to be active, to do whatever I can to help the parties come to an agreement," in the context of the final status talks, he said.
He added that he is "quite hopeful" about the prospects for negotiations to resume between Syria and Israel.
Clinton said the question of the establishment of a Palestinian state is "to be resolved in the permanent status talks that have just begun, so I think they will resolve it. I think, obviously, that the two sides will make an agreement on that, or there won't be an agreement."
