Thousand of Somalis in danger of starving
Somalia, Local, 9/24/1999
The World Food Program stressed on Wednesday that the current fighting among armed groups in southern Somalia will expose hundreds of thousands Somalis to starvation as a result of a food shortage.
In a statement to reporters in Nairobi, the spokeswoman for the World Food Program said that if the deterioration of conditions and instability continue, people who are suffering food problems will face critical conditions later, due to the increased need for foodstuffs, especially milk and wheat.
She indicated that aid flights to the towns of Noula, Bardira and Loug in the south were halted this week as the UN has suspended its activities there because of the fighting in southern Somalia.
