Morocco calls for reform of geographical representation at U.N. Security Council
Morocco-Regional, Politics, 9/23/1999

Morocco on Tuesday called for a reformed composition of the United Nations Security Council based on a "fair geographical distribution."

The present juncture requires a re-examination of the working methods and of the composition of the Security Council "in order to consolidate its credibility and ability to preserve international security and peace, while ensuring a representation based on a fair geographical distribution," Moroccan Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Minister, Mohamed Benaissa, said in a speech before the 54th session of the U.N. General Assembly in New York.

The Minister hailed the constructive steps made for the reform and restructuring of the UN and appealed for the consolidation of the international body's economic and social agencies to enable them to meet the requirements of progress and well-being to which the developing countries aspire.

Morocco is convinced that the efforts geared towards the reform of the various structures of the UNO would not be fruitful unless the organization is endowed with adequate financial and human resources that would help it fulfil the responsibilities vested on it by member states, Benaissa said.
